Find out more about South River Marine
and the history of our local business

A traditional boatyard established in 1987 and based in Norfolk

South River Marine is situated on the west bank of the beautiful river Waveney, between Beccles and Great Yarmouth. The boatyard occupies the old Albatross Marine Boatyard where the famous ‘Albatross’ aluminium speed boats were built and offers open access to the Norfolk Broads and the North Sea through Great Yarmouth Harbour.

Established in 1987, we specialise in traditional wooden yacht and motorboat boat building, restoration and repair. We work on a wide range of projects, ranging from clinker dinghies, local sailing dinghies and keelboat classes, motor launches, up to larger sailing cruisers and wooden motor cruisers.

History of the boatyard

We have been the official builder to the Norfolk 14ft One Design Dinghy Class since 1991, a traditional varnished mahogany, clinker built, Broads sailing dinghy with a gunter rig.

There were 86 of these dinghies built between 1931 and 1968 by Herbert Wood of Potter Heigham, with 80 still surviving to this day. We have carried out many repairs to these dinghies, working on no less 42 of the surviving 80 dinghies, including 3 major rebuilds.

We also specialise in wooden mast and spar construction and repairs, using Douglas Fir and Sitka Spruce, laminated together using the West epoxy system. We can also supply all fittings in stainless steel or traditional bronze/gunmetal, along with all associated standing and running rigging.
